Preventative Care

Preventative Care

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

In a general medical practice, preventative care plays a starring role in maintaining and maximizing health. With very few exceptions, most chronic diseases and conditions occur over the course of years or decades. This is particularly true of serious life-altering conditions such as heart diseases and cancer.

Don’t wait to test positive for cancer or a heart attack to act. The time to act is now. Identifying early signs and symptoms of chronic disease will give you the knowledge needed to slow down the progression of a disease or sometimes even completely prevent it.

Preventative care begins with seeing your doctor. During a preventative care visit, your doctor will evaluate your health, lifestyle, and behaviors for risks and resources. Some elements of a preventative care visit include:

  • discussing your social support network and other healthy living resources with you,
  • taking vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature,
  • collecting blood to measure cholesterol, sodium, and other important values,
  • and developing healthy eating and exercise regimens with you.

While such preventative care office visits are key to developing a strong partnership with your doctor, they make up only a tiny portion of preventative care. Such an appointment is only once or twice a year. Your preventative care program is entirely up to you for the other 364 or 365 days of the year. While this might seem like a tall order, just live it as one healthy choice at a time.

Exercise is one healthy lifestyle choice that does so much good for everyone. Starting an exercise program can be as easy as putting on a comfortable pair of shoes and walking briskly for five or ten minutes. Add a few minutes every week and you’ll soon be consistently working out for 30 minutes per day.

The real bonus of preventative care is that many of its lifestyle changes will help you feel better and live a higher quality of life. Getting enough rest, exercising, and providing your body with many delicious fruits and vegetables each day will revolutionize your life by providing you with increased energy, more stable moods, and the ability to think more clearly. Once incorporated, a preventative care program will help enhance health now and in the future.
