what is a physical exam?

A physical examination is a routine test that is performed by your primary care physician to assess your overall health. Also known as a wellness exam, an annual physical not only enables your doctor to evaluate your health status but provides an opportunity for you to discuss any health-related questions or concerns with your provider. During your exam, your doctor will also review your general medical history, check your vitals, and discuss your lifestyle. The overall goal is to identify any possible signs or concerns of diseases so they can be treated early to prevent more serious health issues in the future. To book your annual exam with family practitioner Dr. Priti Ranjan, call Nest Family Medicine in Plano, TX today. We look forward to serving you and your family.

What is Included in a physical exam?

Adult men and women should have a physical exam at least once a year. This is especially recommended for patients over the age of 50. To start, Dr. Ranjan or one of our medical assistants will gather general health information, such as your weight, height, age, blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature. Next, Dr. Ranjan will inspect your body for any abnormal growths or signs of concerns, such as swelling, bruising, and inflammation. From there, we'll have you lie down to assess your abdomen and other parts of your body. After the physical portion of your exam, a blood test will be performed to complete a full blood count and cholesterol check. If necessary, additional tests may be ordered.

what to do after your physical

Once your physical is complete, you'll be free to go. We'll also schedule a follow-up exam to review the results of your blood work and other tests (if ordered). Depending on the findings, Dr. Ranjan may make several recommendations on how to improve your health. In many cases, this will involve minor or major adjustments to your diet, exercise routine, and other lifestyle habits. Certain medications and treatments may also be helpful in managing serious health conditions and chronic symptoms.

Annual Physical FAQ

What is the purpose of an annual exam?

An annual exam is for your doctor to check all of your vitals, talk to you about your health, and if you are having any problems or symptoms. You may also discuss your diet, exercise routines, medications, or other daily health information. An annual exam is a way for your doctor to ensure you’re healthy and talk about ways you can stay healthy.

What does an annual checkup consist of?

An annual exam usually includes a physical exam (vitals, height/weight, heart/lung exam, neurological exam, skin exam, etc.), discussion of your medical history, and a temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate check. They may also draw blood for testing, for example, to check your cholesterol.

How do I prepare for an annual physical?

If you’re just having a routine annual physical, there really isn’t anything special you need to do unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Some may ask that you don’t eat anything eight hours before so that you can get an accurate baseline for your blood cholesterol levels. You’ll need to bring a list of any medications you’re taking, results of medical tests you’ve had, and a list of immunizations. Some other tips include:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Don’t drink coffee, tea, or caffeinated drinks
  • Drink water, stay hydrated
  • Don’t eat salty or fatty foods

Do I need a physical every year?

If you are under 30, healthy, don’t take medications or have a medical condition, and have a healthy lifestyle, you may only need a physical every two to three years. However, it is always a good practice to have an exam every year, even if you are feeling fine and healthy, so your doctor can maintain an accurate health baseline for you.
